No questions are stupid...right?
Ok, so now I am reading Chapter 21 of 1 Nephi. Who is speaking here? Is this Nephi quoting scripture from Isaiah? I realize that I should know, but I feel confused and I am not sure that I can move on until I understand who is speaking. In verse 2 it says, "And he that made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;" So who is this speaking? Who's mouth was made like a sharp sword? Please tell me.

Indeed, who is speaking? You may not have asked a philosophical question, but here's your philosophical answer: are we not all speaking?
ReplyDeleteTechnically, that is Nephi quoting Isaiah. But does Nephi feel the same way about himself? That seems to be why he quotes Isaiah. Maybe Nephi feels like he is being hidden (from his brothers?), while being made into a sharp sword. And even if these people are millennia in the past, could Isaiah not also be speaking about us?
So I guess no answer, but another question?
Hmmm...honestly, I don't know! I always ask Dan those kinds of questions :) I like to take the "how do I apply this in my life" approach. Ha ha! I should probably know more of the doctrine though so don't follow my example! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that I TOTALLY understand how you feel about the Isaiah chapters!! When I was called to teach the 15 year olds the BoM last year, my first lesson was on the Isaiah chapters. Lets just say that I didn't sleep well the night before :P Dan helped me a lot in the preparation though so I got through it but I was happy when that part was over!
YOU ROCK MAGGIE!!! I think about this blog all the time and you totally inspire me! Its HARD to put yourself out there and share such personal thoughts and feelings. I just want you to know that I love reading it and I always come away wanting to do and be better!!!
Thanks you guys. Sorry it has been like a week, our computer was out of commission for a few days!
