very short comment today
so the last verse of chapter 18 it says, "and it came to pass that we did find upon the land of promise, as we journeyed in the wilderness, that there were beasts in the forests of every kind, both the cow and the ox, and the ass and the horse, and the goat and the wild goat, and all for the use of men..." I know that whatever is written in the scriptures has a purpose and is of great importance. I have always been curious about when they mention specific animals and why that is important. I am still wondering. Can anyone enlighten me? That is what I want to learn about this week.

Maybe that was part of the promise? I imagine they didn't bring a lot of animals themselves (remember it took the Jaredites 8 boats?), so in this land of promise, maybe they were acknowledging that everything had been prepared for them.
ReplyDeleteOf course, that answer is too easy, which is why I like to think that listing animals was some way to make us jealous of all the stuff we don't have anymore. I mean, who wouldn't want a cow or an ox just hanging around waiting to be used? Now, we have to have all this money to buy the animals. Curse you, Nephi! I'm so jealous!
(Okay, I take back the curse part.)
Umm...ya, lets not curse the prophets. That is a smart thought about the Lord preparing the animals for them as part of the promise. I feel stupid because I keep thinking...should I be paying more attention to the animals mentioned in the scriptures? Ha ha ha. I am silly, but I was trying to think of why they were important enough to be mentioned.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they are mentioned so that we can remember that certain animals were needed back then in order to live...we don't really need those animals today; we have machinery. How many generations does it take to forget? And if we forget and somehow loose our technology, will we know how to survive? Do we know today what will be important for us to know or rememaber tomorrow?
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog! It's great to get insights into some scriptures and really wonder about some things. I can't think of a reason that they would mention these animals specifically. Maybe those animals helped them out particularly and they were especially thankful for them? It's neat how the scriptures mention things that are important to those people. It helps remind me that things that are important to me are important to the Lord, even when they seem not that big of a deal for someone else. Ok, I don't know if I am making sense. Thanks for your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteSo maybe we should be paying attention to how the animals were being used just in case. I think to, now that it was mentioned, that maybe it is a reminder to us to express gratitude for the day to day things given to us so we can live and the things that have made it easier and possible. I often forget about expressing gratitude for things that I am used to just having access to.
